We recorded our experiments, and we puzzled over the hovering nocturnal mood of our explorations. Of course we were channeling the situation of our lives and of the world, perhaps a dissonance between the realms of comfort and distress, distance from family or a larger distance from our hopes for the human herd. As artists, we take a shamanic path, and we trend toward the outlying regions of cognition. Our musical mood during these sessions reminded me of the books by Peter Kingsley, about pre-Socratic mystics Parmenides and Empedocles, who’s meditative approach of “incubation” planted a more earthy and subterranean core to ancient European philosophy. Consider this musical excursion as subterranean, seeking balance inside of dark silence. Markus and I share a deep friendship based on searching, questioning, practice, and a sort of alchemical process of creating things that never existed before, from within our life journeys. CD in 4panel Digipak, Limited edition of 300! The Surface Below – Immersion Six embraces the senses within a beautifully expansive long-form 72-minute immersion realm. Designed for infinite playback at various volume levels, “The Surface Below” (the album’s sole track) creates intimate physical space, grace and flow. The caress of slowly unfolding cascades of shimmering textures and diaphanous billowing atmospherics makes this the perfect soundworld for immersive listening in one’s habitat. It is a gently potent and nurturing environment for creative states, sleeping, reading and other settings where this understated sonic incense can gently hold the space. Steve officially started his Immersion series in 2006. Prior to that, other long-form classics and listener favorites, such as The Dream Circle and Slow Heat, werereleased in the late 90s. Eventually aspects of this sound were integrated into Steve’s IOS “Immersion station” app which remains a popular app for the iPhone. This album was created using hardware-based synths and effects mixed on an analog console at Steve’s Baja Arizona Timehouse studio. Immersion Six joins this legacy of masterfully created long-form, time suspending sonic soul nourishment. ======================================= Steve Roach – Stillpoint (2cd reissue) https://www.groove.nl/shop/steve-roach-stillpoint-2cd-reissue/?v=1a13105b7e4e CD1: 01 Serenity in Waves [60:50] CD2: 01 Deeper…still [60:06] Originally released in a slim digifile edition (limited to 500) in December 2019 [sold out for long], this NEW, second edition comes in all new Artwork and in a regular, thick 2CD-Digipak! Steve Roach in his own words on ‘Stillpoint’: These two long-form immersions were created in a concentrated, hyper-focused span of time and released digitally on Bandcamp the day after their completion on December 21, 2019. Both pieces present a sumptuous landscape of serenity and suspension. Disk One, Serenity In Waves, ebbs and flows with an oceanic presence that provides a sense of deep peace and constant nourishment. Disk Two, Deeper…Still, dives down into darker waters while providing the sensation of a sonic flotation chamber, embracing the senses in a womb-like experience of safety and warmth. Stillpoint was created for infinite looped playback—from day into night and into the realm of sleep. This is music medicine for the present time. This is potent music medicine for these times, I hope it delivers the serenity in waves for you…. ======================================= Jerome Froese – Sunsets in Stereo https://www.groove.nl/shop/jerome-froese-sunsets-in-stereo/?v=1a13105b7e4e ![]() Jerome Froese’s fourth solo album Jerome Froese became known as a long-standing member of the legendary electronic band Tangerine Dream, where he worked as a composer and multi-instrumentalist from 1990 to 2006. During this time, he was nominated for a Grammy seven times. As the son of Tangerine Dream founder Edgar Froese, who died in 2015, he carries on the musical DNA with independence and a spirit of innovation – in his very own way. Froese’s solo works stand for his unmistakable trademark sound, which he himself describes as “Guitartronica” – a special fusion of electronic sound structures and guitar-based textures. In addition to electronic elements, the album also features stylistic influences from the post-rock and dream pop genres, which lends the sound additional emotional depth and organic warmth. ======================================= Dean Burnett – Autumn Falls https://www.groove.nl/shop/dean-burnett-autumn-falls/?v=1a13105b7e4e ![]() Autumn Falls’ is a reflective odyssey blending all the elements of Dean Burnett’s minimalistic styles. The music drifts between waves of ambience and gently pulsating rhythmic elements. The album opens with ‘Dawn in the Highlands’ and the haunting tones of distant bagpipes. Next comes the longest track on the album ‘Mediation’, with its strange and compelling synth voices seemingly calling to the listener from within the gentle drones. ‘Ferry Man’ continues the drifting ambience but with a gentle piano echoing its delays across the soundscape. ‘I am Flame’ introduces delicate rhythmic percussion and the effective and beautifully evocative spoken vocal of Carys. ‘Mother’ is another minimalist track, the piano returning over a slowly evolving pad, a solitary distant drum punctuating the mix. The title track is superb; another very minimalist piece punctuated by piano chords around which the ethereal voice of Carys caresses the listener as she recites her descriptive, self penned narrative! ‘Reflection’ continues the exceptionally high quality, this time with Dean reciting a thought provoking poem on getting older over a slow and rhythmic synth backdrop. A very poignant track! ‘What About the Children’ sees a shift in tone, if not in style. This is a more upfront, but restrained “angry” instrumental piece…with its subtle undertones no doubt reflecting the horrors of the world. A cool percussive element dominates ‘I Am Always Here’. Again, very minimalist in its approach, but a full sounding track nonetheless, enhanced by the voice of Carys. ‘Sand and Dust’ changes the mood again with a melancholy duduk lead over a pulsating kick and delayed effects. ‘Last Days of August’ and ‘Mountains and Lochs’ close the album with, respectively, a wistful and then atmospheric feel. A stunning new release by Dean Burnett, this is both a thoughtful and a thought provoking album, full of great ideas, beautifully recorded and deserving of a wider audience. Highly recommended. ======================================= Dom F.
