Kaleidoscope Bioscope is the highly anticipated collaborative project from guitar maestro Steve Rothery, founding member of Marillion, who has sold millions of albums worldwide and helped define the sound of progressive rock with chart-topping records — and from electronic visionary Thorsten Quaeschning, musical director of Tangerine Dream, credited on over 100 album releases and known for his acclaimed work on major film and game soundtracks. The word ‘Bioscope’ comes from the Greek ‘bios’ meaning life and ‘skopeein’ meaning to look; prior to the invention of cinema, it meant ‘a view or survey of life’. And that’s what Bioscope is about. The first album to emerge from this project is called Gentō, named after the Japanese term for “magic lantern”, a still-image projection system. It started life in early 2020 and after several five-day trips to Berlin over the years, and a few days in Steve Rothery’s home studio, it was finally ready to be mixed and mastered. This latest Spotted Peccary Music release blends raw, mechanical sound design with lyrical piano and Rhodes arrangements to create an evocative meditation on the transformative power of the experience of time. Expanding into new sonic territory, The Sanctity of Rust marks a creative evolution for Holmes. The album incorporates FM synthesis, advanced distortion layers, and an array of custom samples, alongside the artist’s most extensive use of acoustic elements to date. The result is an organic fusion of analog grit and digital precision, delivering both intimacy and cinematic scale. True to Holmes’ process, sound design remains the core of composition. Familiar tools such as Native Instruments, Arturia Pigments, and Spectrasonics Omnisphere are pushed beyond their known limits, while vintage hardware like the Korg MS20 and Oberheim Matrix 12 bring warmth and unpredictability. Each of the 12 tracks unfold like weathered metal under changing light—what begins as corrosion reveals depth and beauty through layers of texture and tone. Among the countless shots of theatre, dance, and music, were those of Tangerine Dream – a fledgling Berlin-based band he would shadow during the early 1970s. Those images – the bulk of which haven’t been seen in over 50 years – are presented here. Movements of the Visionaries – Tangerine Dream: Through the Lens of Marcel Fugère Volume I – 1972-1974 is a large-sized, coffee-table, hardcover book and has about 320 pages showcasing over 480 colour and b/w photos. With a foreword by former Tangerine Dream member Peter Baumann, this is the first of two volumes (Volume II coming in 2027). The book will be accompanied by a special artful bookmark.
