The short history of Michael Wilkes teaches us that he got interested in EM at the beginning of the 90s and that his sources of inspiration were Jean Michel Jarre, Klaus Schulze, Tangerine Dream and Kraftwerk. In 1991 he based his first band (Mystical Light) with a close friend (Andr Willms) and began the composition of his first titles. More than 18 years later, he was put in touch with Pyramid Peaks founder Axel Stupplich with whom he shares a passion for astronomy. Its the latter who encouraged him to restart his career. Michael Wilkes became then Yog Sothoth, for his passion of H.P. Lovecrafts works, and taken back the keys and switches of his keyboards to compose a first drain cleaning album for the ears (Prehistoric Dawn). Less hammering and sharply more inspired by New Berlin School, Dreams of Mystery takes back the first compositions of Michael Wilkes in a musical envelope remixed in 2010. The result is a delicious mixture of Pyramid Peak and Jean Michel Jarre with as background, a less sustained ardour of the powerful Prehistoric Dawn.

Wieder ein neuer Name in der EM-Szene: Yog-Sothoth. Solch ungewhnliche (Knstler-)Namen stammen meist aus dem weiten Feld der Fantasyliteratur. So auch hier: H.P.Lovecraft ist der Schpfer des Namens, und Michael Wilkes ist der aus Kln stammende Musiker, der sich den Namen ausgeliehen hat. Als Musiker ist Michael Wilkes aber gar nicht so neu, denn schon 1991 hat er gemeinsam mit Andr Willms unter dem Namen Mystical Light die ersten Versuche in der Elektronikmusik gewagt. Es ist zwar damals kein Album herausgekommen, aber einige Titel aus der Zeit wurden nun fr das Yog-Sothoth-Debtalbum Dreams Of Mystery neu aufgenommen, haben also die Zeit berstanden. Fr Dreams Of Mystery hatte Michael Untersttzung durch Axel Stupplich von Pyramid Peak, der ja auch als Axess schon etliche Soloalben herausgebracht hat. Dieser Untersttzung wegen ist der Titel 1 auf Dreams Of Mystery auch Tribute To Axess benannt und Axel Stupplich gewidmet. Ich wei nicht, wie gro Axel Stupplichs Einfluss auf diese Produktion war. Verkehrt war er sicher nicht.
Michael Wilkes Musik ist sehr melodisch, das Zuhren macht groen Spa. Die einzelnen Stcke kommen leichtfig daher. Wenn es mal etwas dunkler wird, dann bricht der Rhythmuspart das wieder auf. Titel wie Ancient Skies oder Dreams Of Mystery klingen zwar vom Namen her mysteris, haben aber nichts derartiges an sich. Ich meine, dass Yog-Sothoth hier ein richtig schnes, positiv gestimmtes Album vorgelegt hat. Dreams Of Mystery drfte auch sehr vielen gefallen, die mit EM sonst keine Berhrung haben.
